EuropaBON: Presentation of the Terms of Reference for the Biodiversity Monitoring Coordination Centre in Europe

We want to share our first >> Deliverable 2.3 (Draft) << on the Terms of Reference for the European Biodiversity Monitoring Coordination Centre with the EuropaBON biodiversity network.

EuropaBON, in collaboration with its stakeholders, are developing the Terms of Reference (ToR) for the European Biodiversity Monitoring Coordination Centre (BMCC).

With the terms of reference, EuropaBON, and its partners, are elaborating on a permanent BMCC for Europe, that could implement and oversee an EU-wide system for biodiversity monitoring. The purpose of the ToR for the BMCC is to propose an organisational and governance structure, different possibilities for coordination, and feasible options for implementing a future BMCC. Following up on several workshops, this deliverable assesses the feasibility of setting up a BMCC and to study the most relevant tasks of a European BMCC.

The BMCC’s vision is to operationalise harmonised biodiversity monitoring for the conservation and sustainable use of Europe’s terrestrial, marine, and freshwater ecosystems. By 2030, the BMCC should – in collaboration with all its partners – coordinate and streamline a system of observations, models, data assimilation methods, and knowledge and capacity-building efforts to deliver regular information on the state of biodiversity in Europe, in ways that promote integration and re-use to benefit all EU citizens and institutions.

Currently, we are in our last consultation phase before the final Deliverable will be published in spring 2024.

If you would like to know more about the BMCC, we invite you to join our webinar. EuropaBON will present the Terms of Reference of the BMCC and introduce our broad online consultation for feedback.

Webinar dates:
