The Future of Biodiversity: EuropaBON at the 52nd GfÖ meeting

EuropaBON made a significant presence at the 52nd Annual Meeting of the Ecological Society of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland (GfÖ Annual Meeting 2023), which took place in Leipzig, Germany from September 12 to 16, 2023. The event was generously hosted by the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig, under the theme, “The Future of Biodiversity – overcoming barriers of taxa, realms, and scales.” The gathering attracted a remarkable turnout, with more than 1,100 participants hailing from approximately 30 different countries. It was a testament to the global significance of biodiversity conservation and research.

EuropaBON took the stage prominently by organising a dedicated session on the Future of Biodiversity. This session saw active participation from EuropaBON’s coordinator, Henrique Pereira (iDiv), and project partners amongst whom Aletta Bonn (UfZ), W. Daniel Kissling (UvA), and Cesar Capinha (IGOT UL). Together, they presented various facets of the EuropaBON project and outlined the project efforts directed toward the establishment of a comprehensive European-wide biodiversity observation network, underlining its pivotal importance in the context of the ever-evolving ecological landscape.

EuropaBON was also among the EU-funded projects showcased at the exhibitors’ booths at the GfÖ Annual Meeting. EuropaBON’s on-site communication team from Pensoft, welcomed attendees to engage in conversations and take promotional materials, including brochures, a RIO booklet, User & policy needs assessment report and information leaflets, offering a comprehensive overview of the project’s goals, activities, and impact.
