
GEO Mountains are on the lookout for their new Scientific Project Officer. The position entails a close collaboration with the co-leads and the network coordinator on various technical tasks associated with the 2023-2025 GEO Mountains implementation plan.
The position is an entry-level one and is positioned at the MRI Coordination Office at the University of Bern, Switzerland.
Responsibilities:
- Undertake the ongoing development and maintenance of inventories of in situ observational infrastructure and other datasets, tools, and resources related to various disciplines applicable to mountainous areas around the world.
- Search for and identify relevant datasets in the published literature, occasionally liaising with representatives of operational services, as needed.
- Conduct statistical and/or spatial analyses, including the graphical representation of results for reporting purposes.
- Assist the GEO Mountains co-leads and network coordinator with the logistical planning for events, as well as with the outreach and communications efforts to promote GEO Mountains activities and its products.
Requirements:
- A Bachelor’s degree (or working towards a Master’s degree) in relevant disciplines such as Earth sciences or geomatics.
- Experience in working with data and data management systems, GIS, and familiarity with data visualisation techniques.
- Knowledge of programming languages such as R or Python, and experience working with PostGIS, are highly desirable.
- Ability to work efficiently and independently, with excellent intercultural communication and interpersonal skills.
- Spoken and written proficiency in English is required, with proficiency in German and/or French being an advantage.
